A Brush Basher's Diary
Welcome
The Brush Type 4s: arguably the finest diesel locomotives ever to grace Britain's railways.

I've been a keen follower of these machines for roughly 25 years now, and during that time much has changed. Fortunately I've been able to capture most of that period on film, the results of which are here.

So welcome to my gallery. It's currently 'work in progress': collections are in chronological order (I've kicked off with the early 1990s, but there's plenty to follow on either side) and I'll add to it as time permits.

If you're not keen on 47s, have a look anyway - you might find it educational! No, seriously, I've also got a sizeable collection of other diesel/electric traction photos from the period 1980-1990, which will appear in due course.

Thanks for visiting - I hope I've managed to bring back a few memories!

Having run round, and with some happy customers alongside, 47325 waits to head back from Holyhead with 2J35 1354 to Manchester Victoria (03/08/1991)  1991 - Part 3 (July-September)  (87)
In a year when many of the rarer 'no-heat' 47s embarked on refresher courses in coaching stock, the appearance of 47304 was perhaps not unexpected. It certainly helped erase some painful memories for this character, pictured alongside his 507th Brush (24/08/1991)  1991 - Part 3 (July-September)  (86)
47006 steams again! Well, not quite... Whilst working 2O71 0736 Edinburgh-Glasgow Queen Street, the loco had overheated at Lenzie due to a loss of coolant. The steam was coming from the loco's radiator rather than a reactivated train heating bolier (20/04/1990)  1990 - Part 1 (January-June)  (84)

2009 - Part 4 (July-August)
I'm probably being picky, but a bit like the summer weather, July and August promised much and didn't quite live up to expectations. I think it's the 'Braidhurst Massacre' during 769+815's abortive trip to Inverness that leaves the sour taste in the mouth, but ultimately the moves book will show amongst others 804+826 to Blaenau and Liverpool, 812+843 to Carlisle, Penzance and 2 x Edinburgh, 501+802 to Lowestoft and Paignton; 760+786 to Cardiff, and five days of 'Shoves' at Wensleydale. What on earth am I moaning about???
2009 - Part 3 (May-June)
A quick tally reveals 22 different '47s' featured in this collection - it's been a busy couple of months! Stars of the show just have to be 47804 and 47826, with visits to Fort William, Kyle of Localsh, Salisbury, and finally (for the first time in the near-47 year history of the Class!) Aberystwyth. 47760, 47798, and 47851 provided the supporting cast, and a special mention must go to 47786 for the number of ecs duties it appeared on! Away from the main line, some more relaxed days were enjoyed at Wensleydale, the ELR , K&WVR Gala, Butterley and finally Llangollen.
2009 - Part 2 (April)
What a month! Not only a 47-hauled charter every Saturday, but also a Friday trip to Inverness, a St George's day jaunt to Bath, and a three-day weekend tour to the Highlands of Scotland. The moves book hasn't looked this good in ages! If that wasn't enough there's a selection of lineside phots of ecs and even freight workings, plus a day out at Butterley with pioneer 47401. Even the weather obliged with several days of wall-to-wall sunshine! Enjoy...
